One of the earliest ancient woods to have been recorded in south-east Essex, being mentioned in anglo-saxon times. The tree species are predominately sessile oak, hornbeam and sweet chestnut, with some wild service. It is particularly rich in ancient woodland plants, including wood sorrel, bluebell and wood-rush, and has many wood ant mounds.

Visiting

Turn south off the A127 at Rayleigh Weir on to Rayleigh Road (A129) and turn left on to Daws Heath Road at The Woodmans PH mini-roundabout. Or join the A129 from the A13, and turn right on to Daws Heath Road. SatNav: SS7 2UN.

Hourly bus service exc. Sundays serves Daws Heath Road. More frequent services run along Rayleigh Road and pass Woodmans Arms PH (400m to west via Daws Heath Road).

Accessible at all times

April to June for wild flowers and songbirds; October for fungi.
